2007 NFL Preseason news and notes

Notes from around the NFL as opening day looms on Thursday, when the defending champion the Indianapolis Colts welcome Reggie Bush and the New Orleans Saints.

Broncos add Rice
The Denver Broncos picked up a huge boost for their pass rush when they signed free agent Simeon Rice. Rice, who has played 11 seasons with Arizona and Tampa Bay and will be reunited with hard-hitting safety John Lynch, is coming off the lowest sack total of his career (two, in eight games) and a change of scenery could reignite the veteran defensive end's career. Rice has eight seasons of ten or more sacks, and will add some much-needed force up front for the Broncos defense.

Strahan ends holdout
Another pass-rush specialist is back in action after Michael Strahan decided to end his holdout with the New York Giants after missing all of training camp and the full preseason slate. Strahan has spent his entire 14-year career in the Big Apple and has amassed 132 sacks for the Giants during that period, including breaking the single-season record with 22.5 sacks in 2001. But Strahan is coming off a season in which he racked up his least amount of sacks since his rookie season (he had three in 2006), and there are questions about whether he will be ready in time to face the Cowboys in Dallas this weekend. Strahan will be docked close to $500,000 for his holdout.

Quinn to hold clipboard - for now
The Cleveland Browns have done the expected and named Charlie Frye as their starting quarterback for their opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers this week, while their fans scream for rookie Brady Quinn to lead the team out on the field. There's not much doubt that Quinn was the best Cleveland quarterback during the preseason, but coach Romeo Crennel and the Browns' organization seem determined not to rush the Notre Dame grad into the cauldron of NFL competition before he's ready. Still, as the talented trio of Vince Young, Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler demonstrated last season, it will only be a matter of time before Quinn is calling the shots for the Browns.
