Steelers open as 7-point Super Bowl favorites

And then there were five. That would be five teams in the NFL that have never made a Super Bowl. The list was six strong before Arizona’s upset of Philadelphia on Sunday, leaving the Lions, Browns, , Texans and Saints as the lone teams never to reach the big game.

And boy might these Cardinals pay off big time.

At the Las Vegas Hilton, for example, Arizona began the playoffs as the longest shot to win the Super Bowl, at 40-1. Before the season began, the Cardinals’ odds were 45-1.

“That’s how much we disrespected them,” said Jay Kornegay, the executive director of the race and sports book at the Las Vegas Hilton. “Bettors aren’t buying into the Arizona Cardinals, no matter how many times they win as underdogs this postseason.”

Arizona has opened as a 7-point dog on WagerWeb.com against Pittsburgh. The NFC champs are +230 on the WagerWeb.com money line.

Of course there will be plenty of prop bets to choose from on WagerWeb.com, including who you think the game’s MVP will be. Do know this before putting your money down on one of those tremendous Steeler defensive players: In the 43-game history of the Super Bowl, a defensive player has been named MVP only seven times (Dallas defensive linemen Randy White and Harvey Martin shared the 1978 honor).

The Cards are the first nine-win team to reach the big game since 1979, when the Rams lost to the . The Cardinals have scored at least 30 points in each playoff game, while the held opponents to 13.9 points a game this season – ranking them No. 1 in the NFL in total defense and points allowed. Pittsburgh has allowed 30 points or more just once this season, a loss at Tennessee.

Both teams were 9-7 against the spread in the regular season, and both have covered in each playoff game – the Cards, of course, weren’t favored in any of them.
