Handicapping Championship this Weekend in Vegas


This weekend the in Las Vegas will be the setting for the 10th Annual Daily Racing Form/National National Handicapping Championship. The contest will pit 301 horseplayers against each other for $962,000 in prize money. The final 301 players survived elimination from a pool of 100,000 that played in 88 qualifying tournaments.

The competition will consist of players making 15 mythical $2 win-and-place bets each day of the championship. The players must wager on eight mandatory races, and they also get to choose seven others. They can choose from Aqueduct, Gulfstream, Tampa Bay, Fair Grounds, Oaklawn, Golden Gate, and , and will earn points based on the track payoffs, which will be capped at $42 to win and $22 to place.

The player with the best score at the end wins the title of Handicapper of the Year and the $500,000 first-prize money. Male champions will also receive a championship ring, and if a woman wins she will receive a championship pendant. Second place will earn $150,000, with third place getting $100,000. Fourth place is worth $45,000, and the prizes decrease down to $500 for 30th place. Last year’s winner, Richard Goodall, will be honored on Monday at the Eclipse Awards.

The event will include races on Friday and Saturday. Daily prize money of $2,500 will be awarded to the leader after Friday’s picks, with $2,000 awarded for second, $1,500 for third, $1,000 for fourth, and $500 for fifth. To maintain interest on the second day, daily prize money of $5,000 will be awarded for first, $3,000 for second, $2,000 for third, $1,500 for fourth, and $1,000 for fifth.
