Forsberg on comeback road to Avalanche again?

Give some credit in the fact that he appears fiercely loyal to the Colorado Avalanche despite the Avs having basically zero chance to win a Stanley Cup and the very real possibility that the Avs miss the playoffs altogether. Colorado is currently a +3000 long shot on WagerWeb.com to win the Western Conference and currently outside of a playoff spot.

Yet Forsberg has begun a comeback in his native Sweden, training with the Modo hockey club in Ornskoldsvik. Modo spokesman Hasse Andersson confirmed Monday that Forsberg has been training with the team’s junior and veteran squads. Forsberg participated in a full practice on Tuesday.

“The foot didn’t feel as good as (I) hoped,” Forsberg said Tuesday. “But I will be training here for two, three weeks and see how I feel.”

Forsberg, who has said previously that if returns to the NHL that it will be with Colorado, admits this could be his last chance at an NHL comeback.

“If it doesn’t work now I’m forced to give it up for good,” Forsberg said Tuesday.

The 35-year-old forward and former NHL scoring champ and MVP rejoined the Avalanche late last season but was hampered by injuries and didn’t return for 2008-09.

Forsberg hasn’t been on an NHL team’s roster for a full season since 2006-07, when he played a combined 57 games for the Philadelphia Flyers and Nashville Predators.

He had 14 points (one goal) in nine regular-season games last year, and five points (one goal) in seven playoff contests. But he was bothered by injuries that kept him out of nine of 18 regular-season games and three of four games in the second round of the playoffs.

This year’s Avalanche team has been ravaged by injury. In addition to likely being without Joe Sakic for the remainder of the season, star Paul Stastny is out with a broken arm, likely for at least another month. Forsberg definitely would be on the wish list of about every playoff-caliber team if he were to change his mind about where to play - assuming he can.
