What has happened to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish? Once a top-10 team, Notre Dame could well fall out of the rankings on Monday after losing Saturday to Connecticut, the Irish’s third straight loss and their first in 45 games at home, which had been the longest streak in the country.
Things don’t get any easier on Monday night for the Irish, as the Big East-leading Marquette Golden Eagles come to town. Marquette has won nine games in a row and sits atop the country’s best conference with Louisville. But Marquette is a 3-point underdog on WagerWeb.com for Monday’s game.
There will be a new-look starting lineup tonight for Notre Dame, according to coach Mike Brey. The change hasn’t been confirmed as of this writing, but it’s likely that forward Zach Hillesland or guard Ryan Ayers may move to a reserve role while sophomore Tyrone Nash or senior Luke Zeller joins the starting five.
“We’ve got to figure out something,” guard Tory Jackson said. “If it means changes, do whatever it takes because we have to get this thing going. We have to get it going fast to get where we want to go.”
All-American Luke Harangody remains a stud, leading the Big East in points and rebounds, but the problem has been receiving consistent offense from anyone other than him. Notre Dame has recorded back-to-back season lows for shooting in its last two games. Against the Huskies, the other four starters other than Harangody combined for 22 points on 8-for-39 shooting.
The Golden Eagles certainly should be fresh, as they have played just twice since Jan. 10. They average 81.5 ppg and Notre Dame is right behind them at 80.1 ppg. But Notre Dame struggles on the defensive end and is near the bottom of the Big East on that end. Notre Dame has lost eight of the last 11 games between the teams and struggled last season against the guard-oriented Golden Eagles, who averaged 88.0 points while shooting 44.6 percent (33-for-74) from 3-point range in three games. The teams each won on their home court before then-No. 25 Marquette upset 14th-ranked Notre Dame 89-79 in the Big East tournament quarterfinals.
Still, I expect a Notre Dame victory on Monday night because the Irish are desperate.
