Monday NBA: Heat might get Marion back vs. Clips

Not that the Miami Heat should need to beat the sad Los Angeles Clippers, but it appears Miami might get its second-best player back from injury tonight in South Florida.

The Heat are 9.5-point favorites on WagerWeb.com.

Marion missed his fifth consecutive game when he sat out Saturday night’s loss to the Dallas Mavericks, the Heat’s second consecutive loss. And rather shockingly, the Heat have been owned by the Clippers. Miami has lost two straight and 10 of the last 15 meetings against the Clippers, including a 97-96 defeat Nov. 29 when Dwyane Wade’s 27-foot heave at the buzzer fell short.

Los Angeles, however, has lost five straight overall and is 2-19 in its last 21 games.

Marion worked out Sunday and officially will be a game-time decision. The Heat won’t have backup shooting guard Daequan Cook, who is expected out at least one game with a bruised left thigh. If neither Marion nor Cook plays, the Heat would start someone named Yakhouba Diawara at small forward and James Jones would be the top reserve. Cook has been playing small forward in addition to shooting guard all season. He got hurt with four minutes left in Miami’s 111-96 loss to the Mavericks. He was feeling somewhat better Sunday, the team said, but still is listed as doubtful for tonight’s game.

The Heat fell to 4-13 when their opponents score 100 points or more this season. Wade, the NBA’s leading scorer at 28.5 points per game, is averaging 27.3 points and shooting 52.5 percent in seven meetings with the Clips. He had 26 points and 11 assists in Miami’s loss at Los Angeles in November.

Los Angeles is coming off a 106-94 setback to the equally bad Washington Wizards on Saturday. The lone bright spot for this team has been rookie Eric Gordon, who is averaging 23.6 points per game over the last three contests. The Clips will remain without power forward Zach Randolph because of a knee problem.
