The Sunshine Millions will take place at Santa Anita Park and Gulfstream Park on January 24th and has drawn a nice collection of stakes winners. The eight races will pit California-bred horses against Florida-breds, and the purse for the races total $3.6 million.
The most anticipated race of the day is the $300,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint at six furlongs for four-year-olds. The other highlighted races on the card include the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff, for fillies and mares aged four and up at 1 1/16 miles; the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Turf for four-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles; and the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Oaks, for three-year-old fillies at six furlongs.
The $300,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint has shaped up to be a battle. It has attracted four grade 1 stakes winners, one from Florida and three from California. Georgie Boy won the Del Mar Futurity (gr. I) in September 2007 and has a 9-4-2-2 record and $533,634 in earnings. Cost of Freedom won the Oak Tree’s Ancient Title Stakes (gr. I) on Sept 27, 2008, and Johnny Eves won the Malibu back in December of 2007. The Florida-bred stakes winner is In Summation, who won the grade I Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar in July 2007.
“The Sprint looks like it should be a terrific race and overall, we’re happy with the way our races here are shaping up,” said Santa Anita Racing Secretary Rick Hammerle. “With four grade I winners pre-entered, the Sprint should be a tremendous race and it looks like California should be very well represented.”
